With all three Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD 5A high school football teams preparing for their final game of the 2021 regular season, the squads are a combined 10-16 — a winning percentage of 38-percent.
Creekview and Newman Smith will cap things off this week, with the Mustangs having already secured a playoff berth and the Trojans eliminated from postseason contention. Both teams play on Thursday.
R.L. Turner is on its bye week and will bring its season to an end next week. The Lions’ week 11 game preview will be included in this story. Here’s all the game info, previews, and projections for week ten’s contests.
Oct. 28: #3 Creekview (4-4) at #5 FW North Side (4-4)
Location: Farrington Field (Fort Worth)
Kickoff: 7:00 p.m.
Previous game results:
Creekview 19, FW Polytechnic 13
North Side 53, FW Trimble Tech 6
Spread (via CalPreps): Creekview (-10)
2020 result: North Side won, 63-28
With the forfeiture of Creekview’s regular season finale by Trimble Tech, the Mustangs have clinched their first appearance in the playoffs since 2015. A trip to Canyon Randall likely awaits them, but before that, they must turn their attention to one last district showdown with North Side — a team that ran Creekview off its home field a year ago.
With as shallow of a roster as the Mustangs have, head coach Tony Castillo might elect to pull his starters early in this contest for the sake of injury prevention. This makes projecting the outcome of this game virtually impossible, but as a Creekview alum, I’m more than happy to deal with that.
North Side started this season 3-1, but has lost three of its last four. However, with a win and a FW Southwest loss, the Steers would slide into the final playoff spot of District 4-5A Division 2 ahead of their showdown with the Raiders next week. If the Mustangs play it safe and North Side keeps the pedal down with its playoff hopes on the line, the Steers will come out on top.
CalPreps Projection: Creekview 38, North Side 28
Oct. 28: #5 Newman Smith (4-5) vs. #9 Samuell (0-8)
Location: Standridge Stadium (Carrollton)
Kickoff: 7:00 p.m.
Previous game results:
W.T. White 52, Newman Smith 7 (Week 9)
W.T. White 62, Samuell 7 (Week 8)
Spread (via CalPreps): Newman Smith (-32)
2020 result: Newman Smith won by forfeit, 2-0
Newman Smith has already been eliminated from playoff contention due to Bryan Adams owning the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Trojans for the fourth and final playoff spot out of District 6-5A Division 1. Regardless, finishing .500 would be a significant feat for first-year head coach Robert Boone’s squad — and this matchup all but ensures that outcome.
Samuell is winless on the season with an overall record of 0-8, losing all eight of its games thus far by considerable margins, including to R.L. Turner. Newman Smith should have little trouble putting the Spartans away early, and ending the 2021 season on a high note at Standridge Stadium in front of its home crowd to finish 5-5.
CalPreps Projection: Newman Smith 42, Samuell 10
Nov. 4: #8 R.L. Turner (2-7) at #2 Woodrow Wilson (6-2)
Location: Forester Athletic Complex (Dallas)
Kickoff: 7:00 p.m.
Previous game results:
Molina 48, R.L. Turner 26 (Week 9)
Lancaster 49, Woodrow Wilson 20 (Week 9)
Spread (via CalPreps): Woodrow Wilson (-53)
2020 result: Woodrow Wilson won, 63-8
2021 was another rough go-round for R.L. Turner, which will finish eighth in a nine-team District 6-5A Division 1. Still, though, the program is making strides in the right direction in the second year under Mike Farda Jr.’s control. If this season proved anything to be certain, it’s that Farda Jr. was the perfect hire for the Lions.
To end its season, R.L. Turner will square off with second-place Woodrow Wilson on the road. It’s not ideal, but an improvement from last year’s 55-point blowout should be considered something to keep building off of heading into 2022. It’ll be a while until the Lions are competitive on a weekly basis, but the pieces are certainly there — the key will be sustaining progress.
CalPreps Projection: Woodrow Wilson 56, R.L. Turner 3
